Jodhpur City

Jodhpur city is situated in the central of Rajasthan state in northwestern India. It is located on a land tract that is covered with sand hills. Jodhpur is called Marwar (region of death) occasionally. There are areas that form part of the Thar Desert.  

Jodhpur city was founded by Rao Jodha, one of the warrior rulers of the historical region of Rajputana, in 1459. The city was the capital of the princely state of Jodhpur. In 1679, the Mughal emperor Aurangzeb invaded the Marwar region, ordering the conversion of its inhabitants of Islam. Nonetheless, the states of Jodhpur, Jaipur, and Udaipur aliened and prevented the Muslims control. The city fell under the control of the British paramountcy in 1818. India became independent in 1947 and the city of Jodhpur joined the union of India, becoming the second city of Rajasthan.

Jodhpur is the second largest city of Rajasthan. Some parts of the city are surrounded by an 18th century wall. The city has a plenty of notable sites, for instance, Mehrangarh Fort which contains a historical museum and the maharaja’s palace. Mehrangarh Fort stands 400 feet above the city. The fort reflects many periods as it witnessed centuries before it was completed. There is also Umaid Bhawan Palace, the home of the Jodhpur royal family. The palace contains two more parts: Taj Palace Hotel and a museum. Additionally, there is the white marble Jaswant Thada, a memorial to the 19th-century ruler Jaswant Singh II. The marble construction is very tranquil and charming.

Concerning Jodhpur climate, it is of an extreme type. In other words, the temperature range in the city is very high. The weather is typical desert weather, hot and dry. Throughout the whole year, the city is bright and sunny, so it is called the Sun City. The best time to visit the city is between the months of October and March; the climate conditions are the best during that time.

Jodhpur city's location is important as it is a major road and a trade center for agricultural crops, salt, cattle, and wool. The city has an airport that controls domestic flights. The city is best-known for its handicraft products such as ivory goods, leather products, marble stonework, glass bangles, cutlery, and carpets.

Regarding the people, Jodhpuri people are one of the most hospitable people in India. They speak Marwari accent. The main languages spoken here are Hindi, Marwari and Rajasthani.The lifestyle in Jodhpur city is quite captivating. For fashion, the people of the city wear nice multi-colored costumes. The famous Marwar festival is a good presentation of the festive spirit of the city people.

As for women specifically, they wear wide gathered skirts and a hip length jackets with three-quarter length sleeves. In addition, women in whole India tend to wear a lot of pieces of jewelry on many of their body parts. They do not only wear jewelry on earrings, wrists, or necks, but they also wear jewelry on their nose, feet, head, forehead, arms, and waist. Men also have a fashion trend; they wear colorful turbans. The horse riding trousers called “Jodhpurs” are very popular. They took their name from the city only.

Dance and music are important parts of Jodhpur culture, especially folk dances and music. The people of the city perform folk dances during festivals, celebrations, and religious occasions. Two of the most famous dances are “Chari dance” and “Ghoomar.”
