Chennai area, previously called Madras, is the fourth largest metropolitan city of India with a population of roughly 7 million people. The name Chennai was derived from the word Chennapattinam. It is named after the great town Chinnu, which had developed near Fort St. George.

There is also other attractions, including the neo-Gothic style San Thome Cathedral, which was originally built by the Portuguese. The museum displays military relics, memorabilia, paintings and artifacts from the Colonial period.


The city of Chennai also contains a set of markets. George Town Markets and Bazaars are occupied by some magnificent street stalls and markets, including flower, vegetable and spice markets. The area is noisy, chaotic and a photographer’s delight. During the Colonial period, this area was known as Black Town. It was the first settlement of the city; it was settled by locals who came to serve and trade with the British people in Fort Saint George. In addition, the city’s Marina Beach is the longest urban beach in India. It starts from near Fort Saint George and runs 13 km to the south. The beach is a popular place for locals to hang out, as it is dotted with numerous statues and monuments.

Chennai is a diverse city. It has the third largest size of population in India, after Mumbai and Delhi. The people of Chennai, known as Chennaiites, follow a variety of religions like Hinduism, Islam and Christianity. The people take their traditions very seriously. However, there is mutual respect and companionship between them. Besides the local Tamilians, there is migrant population from surrounding places, so communities like Telugu, Malayalee and Sri Lankan Tamil are numerous in the city. Some other communities are Punjabi, Bengali, Gujarati, Anglo Indian, Marwari and people from Bihar and Uttar Pradesh.


Chennai’s climate is hot and humid. In summer, in late May and early June, the temperature reaches an extreme 38-42 degrees Celsius. The temperature drops to an average of 24 degrees Celsius in winter, from November to February. Chennai gets most of its rainfall during the northeast monsoon.


Chennai, the capital of Tamil Nadu, is an important city for manufacturing, healthcare, and IT. The city has managed to retain a spaciousness that other cities in India lack.
