Aswan | Upper Egypt

It’s the third Biggest City in Egypt & it’s located on the South of Egypt , used to be called during the Ancient Egyptians time ( Swan ) that’s means the Market, the City is on the East bank but what is not known for many people that During the Ancient Egyptians time it was only the Island of Elephantine.

Abu Simbel Temples

The Egyptian government and Unesco decided to co-operate in order to save the temples of Abu Simbel and in turn, saving the relics of one of the oldest human civilization by moving them to a higher and safer location far away from the Nile since they have been submerged by the Nile water after building the high dam .

High Dam

In 1952, the interim Revolutionary Council government of Egypt decided to build a High Dam at Aswan, about four miles upstream of the old dam. In 1954, Egypt requested loans from the World Bank to help pay for the cost of the dam (which eventually added up to US$1 billion).

Unfinished Obelisk

Egypt`s biggest monolith Granite piece ,made by the most famous Egyptian female pharaoh -queen Hatshepsut - from 18th dynasty ,this queen wanted to erect the biggest and heaviest obelisk in Karnak temple to honor God Amon Re after she has placed other two obelisks in Karnak temple.

Philae Temple

The temple was built on the honor of goddess Isis the chief deity of the island. This temple is one of the temples which have been relocated after building the High dam ,Isis temple is the biggest one on Philae island which was built to honor Goddess Isis and to record Ancient Egypt`s most famous legend of Isis and Osiris.

Elephantine Island

The island named Elephantine as it was a major ivory trading center or because Egyptians first saw the Elephant in this district. The island is considered a natural boundary between Egypt and Nubia. Its ancient name was Abu, or Yabu, which means elephant. There are many attractive places in this Island such as; The Nilometer, Elephantine museum and the temple of khunum.

Nubian Museum

This museum takes its name from the ancient Egyptian Nbu, meaning gold, in reference to the area's famous gold mines. It was built on an area of 50,000 square meters, 7000 of which are excluded to building, while the rest designed to be the yard of the museum. The work in this unique edifice lasted for 11 years and costed LE 60 million.

Botanical Garden

The island was used by the Nubians to settle in it and they called it Jet Narty. In the year of 1899 lord Kitchener take the island to be a place where his campaign can rest, and call it the lord's house. After his death, this island belonged to the ministry of agriculture.

St. Simeon Monastery and the Tombs of the Nobles

On the uninhabited west bank of the Nile at Aswan, the desert stretches right up to the waters edge. There is little in terms of development along this shoreline, but there are several small attractions that make it worth the ferry ride across the river.
