Why does timing matter for a Nile cruise?
Timing matters because most of your cruise is spent at open-air temples, not in your cabin. On a typical 4-night sailing, you'll visit Karnak, Luxor Temple, the Valley of the Kings, Edfu, Kom Ombo and Philae, often walking for two or three hours with little shade.
In winter, that's a pleasure. In midsummer, the same visits have to be squeezed into the early morning before the heat builds. Choosing the right month makes a bigger difference to your trip than choosing the ship.
What is the weather like on the Nile month by month?
Upper Egypt is dry and sunny all year, and temperature is the only thing that really changes. Here are typical daytime highs and nighttime lows in Luxor; Aswan is usually a degree or two warmer.

Rain is so rare that it isn't worth planning for. The bigger difference between months is daylight: in winter the sun sets around 5:30 p.m., so afternoon visits are shorter.
Which is the best month for a Nile cruise?
November is the best time for a Nile river cruise for most American travelers. The heat has gone, the holiday crowds haven't arrived, and you'll have long, comfortable days at the temples. Late January and early March are close behind.
If you can avoid Thanksgiving week, early to mid-November gives you near-perfect weather at shoulder-season prices. After New Year, the second half of January is just as comfortable and noticeably quieter. In March, aim for the first two weeks, before spring break and the warmer weather of April.
★ Memphis Tours Expert Tip
For the Valley of the Kings, ask your guide for a 6 a.m. start in any season. You'll walk in before the cruise groups and the heat, and the tombs are much easier to enjoy without a line.
How do US holidays affect Nile cruise prices?
Thanksgiving, Christmas–New Year and spring break are the busiest weeks for American travelers, and prices and crowds rise accordingly. They overlap with Egypt's best weather and with European holidays, so the most popular ships sell out months ahead.

If you're tied to these dates, consider adding a few days before or after the holiday. Leaving the Saturday before Thanksgiving, for example, often costs less than leaving on Wednesday.
Is a summer Nile cruise worth it?
A summer Nile cruise is worth it if you're on a budget and handle heat well. From June to August, highs pass 100°F, but cabins and public areas are air-conditioned, and the temples are at their quietest.
The secret is the schedule. Sightseeing starts at dawn, you return to the ship by late morning, and you spend the hottest hours resting, reading or in the pool. Late afternoon brings a cooler breeze for sailing and sunset on deck.
★ Memphis Tours Expert Tip
In summer, carry an insulated water bottle and a cooling towel. Ask your cruise to refill your bottle with cold water before every excursion.
Can you take a Nile cruise in winter?
Yes, winter is the most popular season. From December to February, days are mild at 73–77°F, skies are clear and the light is soft, which is ideal for photos at Philae and Abu Simbel.
Bring a warm layer: the desert cools quickly after sunset, and early mornings can drop to the low 40s°F. That matters if you book a sunrise hot-air balloon flight over Luxor's West Bank, which usually takes off around dawn. Our 10 Day Egypt Tour: Cairo and Nile Cruise is a popular way to see the Pyramids and the Nile in this season.
Are there special dates worth planning a Nile cruise around?
Yes. Two dates stand out: the Abu Simbel Sun Festival on February 22 and October 22, when the rising sun lights the statues deep inside the Great Temple. Both fall in good cruising weather, but they draw big crowds, so book well ahead.
Ramadan is another date to know. In 2027, it's expected to run from about February 8 to March 9. Cruises and sites operate as normal, but some opening hours change and evenings have a festive atmosphere. It can be a rewarding time to travel if you plan for it.
Can you combine a Nile cruise with Jordan?
Yes, and the best time to combine them is March to April or October to November. Those months are comfortable for both the Nile and Petra, which can be cold and occasionally wet in midwinter.
A typical combination is Cairo and a Nile cruise followed by Petra, Wadi Rum and the Dead Sea. Our Best Tour of Egypt and Jordan covers both countries in 14 days, with a Red Sea stop in Sharm El Sheikh.
How far ahead should you book a Nile cruise from the US?
Book 6–9 months ahead for Christmas, New Year and Thanksgiving, and 3–6 months ahead for other dates between October and April. For summer, a few weeks' notice is usually enough.
International flights from the US are the other reason to book early. Fares to Cairo rise sharply for holiday weeks, and the best connections fill first. Booking your cruise, flights and Grand Egyptian Museum tickets together makes it easier to line everything up.

The cheapest time is from June to August, when demand is lowest because of the heat. You'll also find lower rates in May and September. If you want good weather and fair prices, look at early November or late January instead.
May is hot, with highs around 102°F in Luxor, but it's manageable with an early-morning schedule. Visits start at dawn, and you spend the afternoon on board. It suits travelers who don't mind heat and want quieter sites.
Bring light layers for warm afternoons and a sweater or light jacket for mornings and evenings on deck. Comfortable walking shoes, a sun hat and sunscreen are essential all year, even in December and January.
Most travelers choose a 3- or 4-night cruise between Luxor and Aswan as part of a 10- to 12-day Egypt trip. That's long enough to see the main temples. A 7-night round trip suits travelers who want a slower pace.
Yes. Nile cruises between Luxor and Aswan run year-round. Some ships pause for maintenance in the hottest months, so there's a wider choice of ships and departure days from October to April.
