Yes. As of April 2025, Brazil requires US citizens to obtain a visa before travelling — the previous visa-free arrangement has ended. American travellers now need to apply for an electronic visa (e-visa) in advance of their trip. The e-visa is applied for online, so there's no need to visit a consulate in person, and it's typically valid for multiple entries over a period of several years. Your passport must also be valid for at least six months beyond your arrival date in Brazil. We recommend applying well ahead of departure, and we're happy to point you to the official application portal and confirm exactly what you'll need.
It's recommended for travel to the Amazon and several other states, including Amazonas, Mato Grosso do Sul, and Pará. It's mandatory if you're arriving from a country with recent yellow fever outbreaks. Check with your doctor well ahead of departure.
April–June and September–November offer the best balance — comfortable weather, fewer crowds, better prices. December–March is summer: hot, festive, and peak season, with Carnival in February or March. If wildlife is your priority, June–October is dry season in the Pantanal and the best window for jaguars.
Yes — this is one of the most popular requests. Iguazu straddles the Brazil–Argentina border, which makes the combination natural, and Brazil–Peru works well for travellers who want Machu Picchu alongside the Amazon. See our multi-country tours or ask us to build one.
Brazil is visited by millions of travellers every year without incident. As in any large country, the usual precautions apply in cities — be aware of your surroundings, don't display valuables, use arranged transport at night. Travelling with a private guide and pre-booked transfers removes most of the friction, which is a large part of what we do.
o. Brazilians speak Portuguese, not Spanish, but all our guides speak English, and you'll be looked after throughout. A few words of Portuguese go a long way socially, though.
Brazil is a year-round destination, but with a country this vast, the season shapes what you'll see. Here's what each part of the year has to offer.
Spring brings some of the best all-round weather in Brazil, with warm days and far fewer crowds than in summer. It's a superb time for Iguazu Falls — sweeping panoramas from the Brazilian side, misty walkways on the Argentinian side — and for spotting toucans and macaws at the nearby Bird Park. Rio's main sights are quieter and easy to combine with day trips to Petrópolis and Sugarloaf, while the calm spring waters around Paraty are ideal for island-hopping and boat excursions.
Brazilian summer is beach season at its liveliest, when the coast and the wild interior are both at their peak. Rio is in full swing, from the sands of Copacabana and Ipanema to the New Year's Eve fireworks and the build-up to Carnival, and the car-free island of Ilha Grande is perfect for hidden coves and clear-water swims. Inland, the summer rains bring the Pantanal to life, with caimans, capybaras, and hundreds of birds on show, while the Amazon is lush and green — ideal for river journeys and night safaris. Expect heat, energy, and the country at its most festive; book early, as this is peak season.
Brazilian winter is mild, dry, and one of the best times to see the country's landscapes at their clearest. Rio stays pleasantly warm by day — perfect for hiking Tijuca Forest or catching crisp, haze-free views of Christ the Redeemer and Sugarloaf — with cooler evenings for a jacket. This is prime wildlife season in the Pantanal, where animals gather around shrinking water pools and jaguar sightings peak, and dry-season trails in the Amazon are easier to explore. Cool mornings and hearty feijoada make it a wonderful time to travel.
Autumn is the sweet spot between summer's buzz and winter's calm — warm days, thinning crowds, and better rates. It's an ideal time to explore Rio's neighbourhoods and viewpoints in comfortable temperatures, or to head to the Atlantic coast, where Paraty's calm waters make for beautiful boat trips to secluded beaches and the snorkelling spots of the Blue Lagoon. Inland, it's a lovely season to pair Iguazu Falls with the colonial charm of towns like Petrópolis, as the landscape turns green and lush after the summer heat.
