The total solar eclipse takes place on Monday, August 2, 2027. Often called the "Eclipse of the Century," it's one of the longest total solar eclipses of our lifetime, with totality lasting more than double that of most modern eclipses.
The path of totality sweeps across North Africa and the Arabian Peninsula, crossing Morocco, Tunisia, Egypt, and Saudi Arabia. Egypt is the epicentre: Luxor and the Nile Valley sit on the centreline and receive the longest totality anywhere on land, combined with some of the clearest August skies on the planet. We offer eclipse tours in all four countries so you can choose the experience that suits you best.
Totality lasts up to 6 minutes and 22 seconds at its maximum, in Egypt's Nile Valley — more than double most modern eclipses. Duration decreases the further you are from the centreline: totality reaches nearly 4 minutes 50 seconds near Tangier in Morocco, over 5 minutes across southern Tunisia, and varies along Saudi Arabia's Red Sea coast.
Luxor lies almost exactly on the centreline, delivering the maximum land duration of totality, and southern Egypt has among the clearest, most reliably cloud-free August skies anywhere on earth. Watching day turn to night above the temples of Luxor and the columns of Karnak makes it a truly once-in-a-lifetime setting.
We run dedicated eclipse tours in four countries along the path of totality: Egypt (the epicentre, with the longest totality), Morocco (first landfall near Tangier), Tunisia (Roman ruins and Saharan skies), and Saudi Arabia (Red Sea coast and desert horizons). Tours range from 4-day short breaks to 10- and 12-day journeys.
Yes. You must use ISO 12312-2 certified eclipse glasses — not regular sunglasses, smoked glass, or exposed film — throughout every partial phase. It's only safe to look with the naked eye during totality itself, and glasses must go back on the instant the first sliver of sun reappears. Any camera, phone, or telescope also needs a proper solar filter during the partial phases.
The eclipse is the centrepiece of a full Egyptian adventure. Tours pair totality with the Giza Pyramids, the Grand Egyptian Museum, the Valley of the Kings, the temples of Luxor and Karnak, and a five-star Nile cruise between Luxor and Aswan, with Abu Simbel within reach.
General Tips
- Use only ISO 12312-2 certified eclipse glasses — not sunglasses, smoked glass or exposed film
- Keep the glasses on through every partial phase, and remove them only during totality
- Put them straight back on the moment the first sliver of sun reappears
- Fit a proper solar filter to any camera, phone, binoculars or telescope
- Book 12–18 months ahead rather than the 3–6 months usual for Egypt trips
- Expect centreline hotels in Luxor and Tangier to sell out years in advance, with prices climbing as the date nears
- Prepare for real August heat — Luxor and Aswan routinely reach 40–45°C on eclipse day
- Sightsee early in the morning and stay indoors around midday
- Carry water and electrolytes, wear a hat and loose, lightweight clothing
- Understand that being inside the path of totality is all-or-nothing; just outside it is a completely different experience
- Get as close to the centreline as possible, since that's what buys the extra minutes
- Watch for the temperature drop, the strange metallic light, and birds and animals falling silent
- Look out for shadow bands, Baily's beads, the diamond ring and the corona, with stars and planets visible at midday
- Spend your first totality watching rather than fiddling with a camera — six minutes goes quickly
- Keep the solar filter on for the partial phases and remove it only during totality
- Bring a tripod and practise your settings well before the day
- Accept that phone photos of totality usually disappoint, and consider leaving it to the professionals
- Choose southern Egypt for some of the clearest August skies anywhere on earth
- Expect a genuine cloud risk on the Moroccan coast, and ask your operator what the backup plan is
- Check visa requirements and processing times for each country on your route
- Allow buffer days, since flights and roads will be unusually busy around 2 August
- Arrive at least a day or two before eclipse day so a delayed flight can't cost you the trip
- Take out travel insurance
- Come without any astronomy background — the experience needs none, and children enjoy it too
- Note that even for seasoned eclipse chasers, this one stands out for the sheer length of totality
