The route has been carefully designed to alternate between comfortable driving and time on foot, so that in a single morning or afternoon you take in the city's defining sights — Plaza de Mayo, the vast 9 de Julio avenue, the Casa Rosada, the colourful district of La Boca, and more besides. Café Los Angelitos has stood at the heart of tango in Buenos Aires for over a century, and its show traces an entire era with elegance and flair. Each evening, more than twenty performers take the stage to give travellers something they won't forget. This is where Carlos Gardel set up his own bar in 1912, at the start of his career, when he was performing as a duo with José Razzano — and it was Razzano who, in 1944, wrote a celebrated tango to lyrics by Cátulo Castillo bearing the venue's name, "Café de los Angelitos." The evening brings together tango's traditional and contemporary faces, performed by accomplished dancers and musicians in a welcoming setting. A three-course dinner can be added.

OPTIONAL TOUR — NOT INCLUDED: A day in the countryside at Areco and Estancia El Ombú

At the appointed hour, our team collects you from your hotel to head for San Antonio de Areco, known as the country's capital of tradition, where the character of rural Argentina comes into focus. A guided walk through the old centre takes in museums and craft workshops, including the well-known Ricardo Güiraldes Museum, before the day continues at Estancia El Ombú de Areco. There you'll sit down to a classic Argentine asado, choose between riding on horseback or touring by carriage, and watch folk dancing and displays of traditional horsemanship in surroundings full of character — a genuine cultural encounter with gaucho heritage.

Full-day excursion to the Argentinian Iguazu Falls

The morning takes us into Iguazu National Park, created in 1934 to safeguard the spectacular waterfalls and the dense subtropical forest around them, home to its own distinctive wildlife and plant life.

After arriving at the Visitor Center, we make our way to the Central Station and board the Ecological Train bound for Garganta Station. From there we set off along the network of walkways, threading past small islands and thick greenery, until the Garganta del Diablo balcony opens up in front of us — the falls' greatest cascade, dropping 72 metres with an average flow of 1,700 cubic metres per second.

Returning to Garganta Station, we continue to Cataratas Station and take on the Upper and Lower Circuits, working our way down past the Two Sisters, Mbiguá, Chico, Ramírez and Bosetti falls to the commanding San Martín. The walk goes on to the Peñón de Bella Vista, taking in the Alvar Núñez and Lanusse cascades.

OPTIONAL ADD-ON TO THE ARGENTINIAN FALLS — NOT INCLUDED: Great Adventure

Travelling in off-road vehicles alongside specialist guides, we cover 8 km of the Misiones jungle on the Yacaratia trail inside Iguazu National Park, spotting native plants and animals along the way before reaching the forest base at Puerto Macuco. From there we walk down to the floating dock, put on life jackets and climb aboard semi-rigid inflatable boats to begin our run on the Iguazu River. We push into the waterfall zone, where the Brazilian and Argentinian cascades can be seen together, and press on to the most exhilarating moment of all — drawing up directly beneath the mighty San Martín fall for the celebrated "baptism of the mists." Overnight in Puerto Iguazú.

OPTIONAL TOUR — NOT INCLUDED: Half-day excursion to the Brazilian falls

Leaving Puerto Iguazú, we cross the Tancredo Neves Bridge over the Iguazu River into Brazil and arrive at the Visitor's Center at the gates of the Brazilian National Park. There we board the ecological bus for a 20 km ride through the Paraná forest to the start of the boardwalk, where a wide panorama opens out over the Argentinian falls and San Martín Island. We follow the 1,200 metres of boardwalk as the roar of the water grows steadily louder, finishing the walk at Brazil's Floriano Falls.

OPTIONAL ADD-ON TO THE BRAZILIAN FALLS — NOT INCLUDED: Parque das Aves

This wildlife sanctuary cares for birds rescued from trafficking and mistreatment that can no longer survive in the wild. Five walk-through aviaries bring you close to the birds of the Atlantic Forest — yacutinga guans, Alagoas curassows, the remarkable Toco Toucan with its outsized bill, and a flock of almost a hundred macaws passing overhead. Harpy eagles, owls and parrots can also be seen, along with reptiles including caimans, anacondas and boa constrictors. The visit ends at the restaurant (food and drink not included), which looks out over the flamingo lake.

Full-day excursion to Corcovado and Sugarloaf Mountain

The day begins in the morning with a pick-up from your hotel. As you travel along the beaches of Rio's South Zone, your guide fills in the stories behind Leblon, Ipanema and Copacabana. The route then follows Botafogo's appealing waterfront and passes through the historic Laranjeiras district. Ahead of Sugarloaf comes a panoramic drive through the city centre, with the story of samba culture unfolding as you pass the Sambódromo. A stop at the Metropolitan Cathedral allows time to take in its striking pyramid shape, along with Cinelândia Square and the Municipal Theatre. After crossing the historic Rio Branco Avenue, the tour continues to the Urca district. A cable car carries you to the summit of Urca Hill, 215 metres up, where the bay and its islands spread out below; a second cable car then lifts you to the top of Sugarloaf at 395 metres, for a complete 360-degree view over Rio.

Coming back down from Sugarloaf, with the city's scenery in view along the way, you stop for a traditional churrasco lunch offering an ample choice of dishes. The route then leads to the Maracanã for a circuit of the stadium and a brief pause to take it in, before continuing to Cosme Velho station and the train up to Christ the Redeemer. The twenty-minute climb offers a good look at the Tijuca forest, the largest urban forest anywhere in the world. Arriving at the statue, you'll stand beneath this magnificent figure of Christ with arms outstretched in blessing over the city. Overnight in Rio de Janeiro.

Get to know Santa Teresa, the most characterful and bohemian corner of Rio, on a walking tour rich in art, culture, history and architecture. It opens with a tram ride from the city centre up to Santa Teresa, passing over the Arcos da Lapa. From there, the route takes in Parque das Ruínas, the Selarón Steps, the Passeio Público, Cinelândia and Confeitaria Colombo.
