Namibia Self Drive Tour

Today, you'll head south into the spectacular Namib Desert, where you'll spend the next two nights. The drive takes approximately five hours, but the journey is part of the adventure, with breathtaking scenery accompanying you along the way.

On the way: Before leaving Windhoek, stock up on fuel, snacks, drinks, or any last-minute supplies you may need for the road. Drive south to Rehoboth, then choose your preferred route to Sossusvlei. Each option offers incredible scenic mountain passes and panoramic landscapes. Take your time to stop for photographs, stretch your legs, and enjoy a picnic lunch surrounded by Namibia's remarkable scenery. In Namibia, the drive itself is just as rewarding as the destination.

When you're there: Make the most of your visit by entering the park as soon as the Sesriem Gate opens at sunrise—the earlier, the better. Park entry fees are paid at the office when exiting the park. The first 60 km is on a tarred road leading to the main parking area. From there, you can walk the final 5 km through deep sand, continue in your own vehicle using 4WD, or take the shuttle service (additional charges apply). Begin your exploration at Dead Vlei, where a short climb over the dunes reveals the iconic white clay pan dotted with 900-year-old fossilised trees. Before the sun rises fully, the contrasting shadows and towering red dunes create ideal photography conditions. Continue to Sossusvlei, where you can climb Big Daddy or Dune 45, then visit Sesriem Canyon on your way back. As temperatures rise during the day, consider returning to the park later in the afternoon to continue exploring in cooler conditions.

Today, you'll drive north on a scenic five-hour journey, experiencing yet another side of Namibia's incredible landscapes. Watch as towering mountains and endless red sand dunes gradually give way to open plains before reaching the cool, misty coastline and the charming town of Swakopmund, where you'll spend the next two nights.

On the way: Stop in Solitaire to refuel and sample its famous freshly baked treats before continuing through the spectacular Kuiseb and Gaub Passes. Pause for a photo at the Tropic of Capricorn and keep an eye out for oryx, ostriches, and springbok roaming the vast gravel plains. Take advantage of the scenic viewpoints to stretch your legs and admire the seemingly endless landscapes. As you approach the coast, you can drive through Walvis Bay or continue directly to Swakopmund via the coastal road or the back route past Dune 7 along the dune belt. If you'd like to see the ancient Welwitschia plants, take a detour through Ganab and the dramatic Moon Landscape. Please note that you'll need a permit for this route, which can be obtained from the Namibia Wildlife Resorts (NWR) office inside the Sesriem Gate before departing Sossusvlei.

When you're there: Swakopmund offers endless opportunities for adventure and relaxation. Choose from a wide range of optional activities, whether you'd like to explore the dunes, the Atlantic Ocean, or both.

Today, you'll leave the coastline behind and journey inland to the rugged landscapes of Damaraland, one of Namibia's most fascinating regions.

On the way: Drive north along the remote coastline into Skeleton Coast National Park, then head east and exit through the Springbok Water Gate. An early departure is recommended, particularly if you'd like to stop at the Cape Cross Seal Colony along the way. Alternatively, choose an equally scenic inland route from Henties Bay, passing the impressive Brandberg Massif near Uis before continuing to the Twyfelfontein region. As you travel, watch the sweeping plains gradually transform into dramatic granite outcrops and dry, seasonal riverbeds.

When you're there: Set aside a full day to discover the highlights of Damaraland. Visit the ancient Twyfelfontein Rock Engravings, the striking Burnt Mountain, and the unique Organ Pipes geological formation. Venture into the surrounding wilderness in search of the region's famous desert-adapted elephants and other wildlife. If time permits, stop at the Damara Living Museum to gain a deeper understanding of the traditions and lifestyle of the local Damara people.

Today, continue to Etosha National Park, with a scenic drive through the remarkable landscapes of Damaraland. The journey to Anderssons Gate, the park's southern entrance, takes approximately three hours.

On the way: Today's drive is relatively short, so only a few stops are needed along the route. Consider visiting the Petrified Forest, taking a comfort break in Outjo, and stopping at Ugab Terrace for a quick photo. Depending on your departure and arrival times, check in at your lodge just outside the park entrance, enjoy a light meal, and then head into Etosha for an afternoon self-drive safari. Pick up an Etosha National Park map at the shop in Okaukuejo, where you'll also find basic supplies, drinks, and snacks. There is a fuel station both inside the park and just outside the entrance gates, so be sure to fill your tank before setting off. It's easy to cover more than 200 km in a day inside the park, and you won't want to run low on fuel.

Etosha is one of Africa's greatest wildlife destinations for good reason. Its breathtaking scenery and remarkable concentration of animals make it a highlight of any Namibia Self Drive Tour.

Today's journey takes you across Etosha National Park to your next lodge on the park's eastern side. The drive is a scenic self-drive safari through one of Africa's premier wildlife destinations and typically takes around two hours, although you'll likely spend longer as you stop frequently for wildlife sightings and photography.

When you're there: Your lodge offers a range of guided activities, including game drives into Etosha National Park and guided bush walks within the private reserve.

Today marks the end of your Namibia Self Drive Tour as you return to Windhoek. The drive takes approximately six hours on well-maintained paved roads, allowing plenty of time to reach the city for your onward flight or an overnight stay.

On the way: Stop at Okahandja, home to Namibia's largest woodcarvers' market, for some last-minute souvenirs. If you're flying out today, be sure to allow enough time to return your rental vehicle, transfer to the airport, and arrive at least two hours before your international departure.
