Twelve days is exactly how long Japan deserves. In Tokyo, Sensoji Temple, Tokyo Skytree, a Sumida River Cruise, Meiji Jingu Shrine, Shibuya Crossing, and the electric energy of Shinjuku fill three full days of private exploration. A Shinkansen day trip then carries you north to Sendai, where Zuiganji Temple, Aoba Castle Ruins, and the celebrated pine-studded islands of Matsushima Bay open a side of Japan most tours never reach.

Mount Fuji rises above Lake Ashi in the Hakone region, the Ropeway crosses above steaming volcanic craters at Owakudani, and a traditional ryokan night with onsen brings the day to a close in the most Japanese way possible.

Kyoto follows with the Golden Pavilion, Kiyomizu-dera Temple, the Gion District, and Fushimi Inari's ten thousand vermillion torii gates climbing the mountain.

Nara's sacred deer wander freely through the grounds of Todaiji Temple. Osaka delivers Umeda Sky Building, Osaka Castle, Kuromon Market, and the neon-lit energy of Dotonbori.

And Hiroshima closes the journey with the Peace Memorial Museum, the Atomic Bomb Dome, and the extraordinary sight of Itsukushima Shrine's great torii gate rising from the tidal waters of Miyajima Island.
