We want to thank Mohamed Sakr and Memphis Tours for arranging our day trips out of Sharm el-Sheikh. We did Petra by Cruise and St. Catherine's Monastery. When we had to make last minute changes in our plans, Mohamed was great staying in touch by email (and once by phone - Memphis Tours has a US 1-800 number so it cost us nothing to talk to them) and expertly rearranged our schedule even at the last minute so we were able to see everything we came to see.
The St. Catherine's tour was outstanding. Our private guide Ali and driver Ahmed were splendid. Everything was even better than we had hoped. Hiking up Mt Sinai in the dark with Beduoin guides and camels to see the sun rise over the mountains was a truly unique experince. It may be the best hike we have ever done (even better than Machu Pichu in Peru)!
The Petra tour was handled excellently on the Egyptian end. Unfortunately on the Jordanian side (conducted by a Jordanian tour group) there was no Aqaba city tour or shopping as the itinerary said there would be. Part of the reason may have been that we
were merged into a huge group and the buses stopped 45 minutes from Petra when entering and leaving Petra at the same souvenier place. These stops totalled nearly 35--40 minutes. Without an Aqaba stop, that meant there was no chance to get any food other than chips at the souvenier stand. Thus, we had no real food from lunch (which was excellent) at about 1300 until 0800 the following morning (since we did not arrive back in Sharm el Sheikh until 0130). Since the boat was running over an hour late, there was plenty of time for them to have stopped in Aqaba too. Instead, the bus driver slowed
down to about half speed and we still waited about 45 minutes at the pier for the boat to arrive. BUT, getting to see Petra was fantastic and they did give us plenty of time on the site and that was wonderful.
Memphis Tours is a wonderful agency. This was our 4th trip to Egypt and we will be using Memphis Tours again on our next trip to Egypt.
