Begin your Saudi Arabia luxury tour with a fascinating journey through Riyadh’s history and heritage. Your first visit is to Diriyah, the historic site on the outskirts of Riyadh and the birthplace of the first Saudi state, which is also the present home of the royal family. Its traditional mud-brick walls once surrounded a flourishing desert city that became an important center of culture, commerce, and political influence.
In 1745, Diriyah was named the country’s capital, establishing important foundations for the later unification of Saudi Arabia. Walk through the historic district and admire its ancient ruins, including the remains of impressive palaces, traditional houses, and the old marketplace.
Continue to Masmak Fort, located in Riyadh’s historic quarter and built during the reign of Abdullah bin Rashid in 1895 A.D. Afterwards, visit Dirah Souq, a traditional market famous for its colorful textiles, silk fabrics, and luxurious pashminas, before stopping for lunch.
In the afternoon, accompanied by your guide, visit the National Museum, one of Saudi Arabia’s national treasures and a World Heritage Site. The museum consists of eight galleries presenting the story of Arabian history, from the creation of the universe through to the modern era.
Continue to Murabba Palace, constructed by King Abdul Aziz in 1937. Originally built as a family residence using locally sourced materials, the complex includes several smaller palaces, service buildings, and the Royal Diwan. After completing your Riyadh sightseeing, return to your hotel and enjoy a relaxing evening.
Overnight: Riyadh.
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch.
After breakfast, transfer to the airport for your domestic flight northwest from Riyadh to AlUla, one of Saudi Arabia’s most remarkable cultural destinations. Upon arrival, begin your AlUla tour with an afternoon visit to the World Heritage-listed Madain Saleh, also known as Hegra.
Hegra was the southernmost settlement of the Nabataean Kingdom and was once known as Al Hegra. The ancient city served as an important stop along the prosperous trade routes of the region. Covering approximately 2,000 square meters, the archaeological area contains numerous relics, monumental tombs, inscriptions, and rock-cut structures.
Your AlUla sightseeing includes several of the destination’s most important landmarks:
-
Qasr Al-Farid – “The Lonely Castle”
Visit Qasr Al-Farid, one of Hegra’s most recognizable and largest tombs. Standing alone in the desert, this remarkable monument features a majestic yet unfinished façade carved directly into the sandstone.
Your guide will introduce you to the distinctive Nabataean burial traditions and explain how the impressive tombs were carved into the surrounding cliffs. The site also provides excellent opportunities for memorable photographs, particularly during the early morning or around sunset.
-
Jabal Al-Ahmar – The Red Mountain
Continue to Jabal Al-Ahmar, known for its striking reddish sandstone formations. The area contains more than 18 tombs, several of which feature remarkably preserved inscriptions and detailed carvings.
These tombs were associated with high-ranking Nabataean families, offering insight into the social hierarchy, traditions, and funerary practices of the ancient civilization.
-
Jabal Al-Banat – Mountain of the Daughters
Visit Jabal Al-Banat, a distinctive group of more than 30 tombs believed to have belonged to elite Nabataean women. The site offers an interesting perspective on the position and role of women within Nabataean society.
The beautifully decorated façades feature Nabataean symbols and Thamudic inscriptions, providing fascinating details about the people and communities who lived here centuries ago.
-
Diwan & Jabal Ithlib – Nabataean Meeting Place
Continue to Jabal Ithlib, a sacred mountain that once served as a place for religious rituals, gatherings, and important meetings. The nearby Diwan, a rock-cut hall, functioned as a political and spiritual meeting place where Nabataean leaders and merchants gathered to discuss trade, governance, and religious ceremonies.
A short walk from the Diwan takes you through a narrow passage resembling Petra’s famous Siq, which was used as an important ceremonial route. If time permits, continue to Harrat Uairedh, one of the highest points in the area, offering spectacular panoramic views across the surrounding landscapes.
After your sightseeing, return to your hotel for a relaxing evening in AlUla.
