Frequently Asked Questions

Got questions? We’ve got answers. Find everything you need to know to plan your perfect trip.

1.Are your Peru tours suitable for first-time visitors?

Absolutely, our most popular Peru tour packages are specifically designed with first-time visitors in mind. The 4-day Cusco and Machu Picchu tour and the 6-day Lima to Machu Picchu package are both ideal starting points, covering the essential highlights with expert guides handling all logistics. We also recommend building in an acclimatization day in Cusco, which sits at 3,400 metres above sea level.

2.How do I get to Machu Picchu on a Peru tour?

From Cusco, the standard route is a train from Ollantaytambo or Poroy station to Aguas Calientes, the town at the base of Machu Picchu, followed by a short bus ride up to the site. The train journey takes approximately 90 minutes and is included in most of our Peru tour packages. There is no road access to Aguas Calientes, making the train the primary transport option.

3.Can I book a private Peru tour package?

Yes. All our Peru tours can be run as private departures for individuals, couples, families, or groups. Private Peru tour packages include a dedicated guide and driver, fully flexible timing, and the ability to customise any element of the itinerary around your preferences. Contact our team to arrange a tailor-made private tour.

4.Do your Peru tours include Machu Picchu?

Yes, Machu Picchu is included in all our multi-day Peru tour packages. Entry tickets, the train journey to Aguas Calientes, and a licensed guide at the site are all arranged as part of your itinerary. We recommend booking at least three to six months in advance as daily visitor numbers at Machu Picchu are strictly capped.

5.What is the best time to visit Peru?

The dry season from May to October is the best time for trekking the Inca Trail and visiting Machu Picchu, with clear skies, minimal rain, and ideal hiking conditions. December to April is the rainy season in the highlands, but it is perfect for Lima and the Pacific coast, when warm weather and lush green Andean landscapes make for a very different and equally rewarding experience.

6.How much do Peru tour packages cost?

Our Peru tour packages start from $1,090 per person for the 4-day Cusco and Machu Picchu tour. Longer packages covering more destinations range from $1,350 to $4,999, depending on duration, accommodation level, and inclusions. All prices include guides, breakfast, and transfers.

7.How long are your Peru tours?

Our Peru tours range from 4 days to 19 days. The shortest option is our 4-day Cusco and Machu Picchu tour, ideal if your time is limited. For a complete Peru experience covering the Inca Trail, Lake Titicaca, the Nazca Lines, and the Amazon, our 13 to 19-day packages are the best choice.

8.What is included in Memphis Tours' Peru tour packages?

All our Peru tour packages include licensed English-speaking guides, daily breakfast, accommodation, and all transfers between destinations. Select packages also include domestic flights within Peru, lunches, and entrance fees to major sites, including Machu Picchu. Full inclusions are listed clearly on each individual tour page.

Experiencing the Best of Peru

Peru All Year Round

Peru is a year-round destination that offers a distinct experience in every season. Thanks to its extraordinary geographic diversity — from the Amazon rainforest to the Andes and the Pacific coast — there is always something to discover, whenever you visit. Because Peru sits in the Southern Hemisphere, its seasons run opposite to those in Europe and North America: the dry, clear-skied winter months of June to August are peak time for trekking and Machu Picchu, while the green, lush summer months of December to February bring the rains to the highlands and the warmest sunshine to the coast. This remarkable variety means Peru can be explored and savoured at any time of year — the key is matching the season to the experience you're after.

Spring in Peru: Green Returns to the Andes (September – November)

Spring in Peru: Green Returns to the Andes (September – November)

Spring eases Peru out of the dry season and into its first rains. From September through November, the Andes shift from dry-season gold into vivid green, with wildflowers gradually returning to highland valleys and snow-capped peaks like Ausangate and Salkantay standing crisp against increasingly dramatic skies.

Early spring — September and into October — still carries much of the dry season's clarity, making it one of the best-kept shoulder-season secrets: comfortable trekking, thinner crowds than the June–August peak, and Inca Trail permits that are far easier to secure. As November approaches, the first proper rains arrive, turning the countryside emerald and reviving the Amazon basin, where fresh growth brings increasingly rewarding wildlife sightings.

Temperatures are mild and balanced — pleasant days for exploring Cusco's cobblestone streets, the Sacred Valley's terraces, and Machu Picchu before the high-season rush. It's Peru caught between two seasons: the clarity of the dry months and the lushness of the wet, without the crowds of either.

Summer in Peru: Lush Highlands and the Coast's Beach Season (December – February)

Summer in Peru: Lush Highlands and the Coast's Beach Season (December – February)

Summer is Peru's rainy season in the highlands and Amazon — and its sunniest season on the coast. From December through February, the Andes and jungle receive their heaviest rains, and the reward is a landscape at its most dramatically green: waterfalls at full force, terraces glowing, and a countryside few travellers ever see. Machu Picchu can carry morning cloud and the occasional downpour, but crowds thin and prices soften, making this a rewarding time for travellers who don't mind a shower.

One key planning note: the classic Inca Trail closes each February for maintenance. The train to Machu Picchu still runs throughout, and alternative treks such as the Salkantay route remain open, so a February visit is entirely possible — it simply calls for a different itinerary.

Meanwhile, the Pacific coast comes into its own. This is high summer in Lima and the northern beach towns like Máncora — warm sunshine, ideal conditions for surfing and paddleboarding, and fresh ceviche by the sea. In the Amazon, high water opens up flooded forest to boat exploration, offering a completely different angle on the jungle. Summer Peru rewards travellers who follow the country's contrasts.

Winter in Peru: The Dry-Season Golden Window (June – August)

Winter in Peru: The Dry-Season Golden Window (June – August)

Peru's winter defies expectations. While the Northern Hemisphere bundles up, Peru's highlands enter their most glorious period. The dry season from June through August delivers clear blue skies, brilliant sunshine, and daytime temperatures around 15–20°C (59–68°F) — ideal for outdoor exploration. This is the undisputed best time to hike the Inca Trail, trek to Rainbow Mountain, and photograph Machu Picchu without a wisp of cloud obscuring the view.

Winter is also Peru's great festival season. Inti Raymi, the ancient Inca Festival of the Sun, transforms Cusco every June 24th with ceremony, colour, and music, while Corpus Christi, Qoyllur Rit'i, and countless regional celebrations bring traditional dance and centuries-old ritual to streets and mountain sanctuaries across the country.

Nights in Cusco and the highlands turn genuinely cold, rewarding travellers with crackling fires, warm pisco sours, and the incomparable silence of Andean evenings. In the Amazon, the low-water season exposes riverbanks and concentrates wildlife along the water's edge, delivering some of the year's most spectacular sightings. This is the peak season, so book permits and lodges months in advance — and expect to share the trail. Winter is Peru at its most dramatic, photogenic, and adventure-ready.

Autumn in Peru: The Sweet Spot (March – May)

Autumn in Peru: The Sweet Spot (March – May)

Autumn is the season experienced travellers quietly plan around. From March through May, the rains wind down and the highlands sit at their most saturated green — waterfalls still powerful, the Sacred Valley's terraces at their most photogenic, and Machu Picchu emerging from February's mists into clear, crisp conditions.

Crucially, the Inca Trail reopens in March after its February closure, often with far better permit availability than the June–August peak. With daytime temperatures of roughly 20–26°C (68–79°F), it's warm enough for jungle exploration and cool enough for comfortable Andean trekking — a genuine best-of-both-worlds window.

This is also harvest season across the Andes: highland markets fill with potatoes in every colour, quinoa fields turn golden, and local chicha festivals celebrate the land's abundance across Cusco and Puno. Fewer crowds than the winter peak mean easier lodge bookings and guides with time for real conversation. Autumn combines the lushness of the wet season with the clarity of the dry — which is exactly why it's called the sweet spot.
