- Book 6 to 12 months ahead for peak season (June to October), and earlier for gorilla permits.
- Match the season to the country: migration crossings peak July to September, and Namibia and Botswana are best May to October.
- Choose Kenya for an affordable first safari, and Tanzania for bigger landscapes.
- Pack neutral colors and layers for cold mornings. Avoid bright colors and all-black or all-white clothing.
- Bring a 200 to 400mm telephoto lens, plus spare batteries and memory cards.
- For gorilla trekking, pack waterproof boots, long trousers, gloves and rain gear.
- Take malaria precautions, and see a travel clinic 4 to 6 weeks before departure.
- Check visa rules for every country on your route, including Zimbabwe if you add Victoria Falls.
- Carry some US dollars for park fees and tips, and confirm tipping amounts with your specialist.
- Check luggage limits if your package includes light-aircraft transfers.
