Rwanda Gorilla Trip: Lake Kivu & Volcanoes NP
Our Rwanda gorilla trip stands apart from other Rwanda itineraries by combining two primate treks and a lakeside stay in one 5-day tour. The route runs from Kigali, with a city tour and overnight, to Ruhengeri near Volcanoes National Park for a day of monkey trekking, then gorilla trekking the following day. From there, travelers head to Lake Kivu for a more relaxed final stretch before returning to Kigali to fly home. Where our shorter Rwanda gorilla trip stays close to Kigali and the park, this tour of Rwanda extends further west, adding lake scenery and an extra day of wildlife tracking.

Begin your Tour of Rwanda with a warm welcome at Kigali International Airport, followed by a smooth transfer to your hotel to relax and unwind.
On day two, after breakfast, your Rwanda gorilla trip continues with a Kigali city tour spanning over a century of history. Once a German territory, the city offers stops at the National Museum, a local craft center, and the Genocide Memorial. Following this insightful morning, drive on to Ruhengeri, gateway to Volcanoes National Park.
Day three brings another trek into Volcanoes National Park, this time in search of the playful Golden Monkeys.
Day four of your Rwanda gorilla trip begins with registration for the main event: gorilla trekking. You'll join a small group and receive a detailed briefing before setting out, with the trek itself lasting anywhere from two to six hours or more, depending on where the gorillas are that day. Guides pause along the way for rest and photos.
After the trek, your driver-guide transfers you to your lodge for lunch. From there, leave the volcanic foothills behind and head to Lake Kivu Serena, arriving by evening with the rest of the afternoon free for optional activities at your own pace.
On your final day, enjoy some leisure time at your own pace before the drive back to Kigali. The route winds past scenic plantations and rolling green hills, carrying you into the city in time for your departure.
