Interesting Facts about Maasai Mara

The Maasai Mara is arguably Kenya’s most famous and frequently visited game reserve, making it a must-see destination for any Kenya safari. Much of the iconic film Out of Africa was filmed here. The reserve boasts a rich diversity of wildlife, including the Big Five, and offers unforgettable safari experiences. A highlight is the annual migration of millions of wildebeests, zebras, and gazelles from the Serengeti in Tanzania across the Mara River to graze in the Maasai Mara, usually starting in late June. The reserve is also a paradise for bird lovers, with around 452 species recorded.

Spanning over 700 square miles of sun-drenched plains, Keekorok Lodge—the first lodge in the Maasai Mara, opened in 1962—is perfectly situated along the path of this spectacular migration. Guests can enjoy unparalleled safari adventures, with morning and evening game drives.

The park is home to a remarkable variety of wildlife, including leopards often seen resting in the branches of striking yellow-barked acacias, as well as lions, buffaloes, hippos, waterbucks, warthogs, baboons, and the endangered Rothschild’s giraffe, found only in this park in Kenya. Visitors may also spot the white rhino and the rare black rhino, both carefully protected within the park.
