Smendes

Dynasty:

It was believed that Smendes was the founder the 21st dynasty.

History:

He was the one who ended the New Kingdom and begin the third intermediate period. He is a very difficult individual with almost intractable origins and affiliations. According to Manetho , he ruled for about 26 years. Smendes is a Greek rendering of this king's name. His birth name and epithet were Nes-ba-neb-djed (mery-amun), meaning "He of the Ram, Lord of Mendes, Beloved of Amun". His throne name was Hedj-kheper-re Setep-en-re, meaning "Bright is the Manifestation of Re, Chosen of Re". King Smendes assumed some royal titles Hrihor, who got them while king Ramesses XI was still alive, as king Smades was ruling in the north while king Hrihor was in the south. After this period of Smendes , the High-Priesthood of Amun at Thebes was passed on from father to son, more or less, so that Pinudjem's heirs inherited both the position of High- priest and control of southern Egypt. However, it was also one of Hrihor probable sons Amenememisu , who succeeded Smendes on the throne for a brief period.

Monuments:

There are two sources specifically name king Smendes as pharaoh, consisting of a stelae in a quarry at Dibabia near Gebelien and a small depiction in the temple of Montu at Karnak temple .
