On the west bank of the Nile facing Cairo and on the top of Giza Plateau rise and the three Pyramids erected by Cheops , Chepren and Mycerinus, guarded by the mysterious Sphinx, which is mythical statue with a body of a lion and a human head. The three Pyramids and the Sphinx are considered as the oldest one of the seven wonders of the Ancient World, tallest man-made structure in the world for over 3,800 years and the most important touristic sites in Egypt.

Why it was built?

It is believed the pyramid was built as a tomb for Fourth dynasty Egyptian pharaoh Khufu and constructed over a 14 to 20 year period.
The ancient Egyptian’s aim in building the pyramids was that they should serve as sepulchers for their Pharaohs to preserve their bodies, for they believed in resurrection and immortality.

Who built them?

Khufu's vizier, Hemon, or Hemiunu, is believed by some to be the architect of the Great Pyramid.

The Great Pyramids built by King Cheops (IV Dynasty), circa 2690 BC. The Pyramids covered an area of 13 acres. It’s high, originally 146meters, has now become 137 meters after the erosion of its summit. The Total volume of its stones amounts to 2.5 million cubic meters.

There are three known chambers inside the Great Pyramid. The lowest chamber is cut into the bedrock upon which the pyramid was built and was unfinished. The so-called Queen's Chamber and King's Chamber are higher up within the pyramid structure. Close to the eastern flank of the pyramids of Cheops lies three small pyramids dedicated either to his wives or family member.

King Chefren the son of Cheops, built the second pyramids. Its height reaches 136 meters. At the base it measures 215.5 ms Aquare. Its interior is simple, with two entrances on the north side.It had an exterior covering of fine-grain limestone. Now, only a small part of this covering remains. The third pyramids was built in the reign of “Menkaura” the son of Chefren ; its height is 62 meters . The lower wall of the Pyramids is encased in a layer of granite.

The Sound and Light at the Pyramids:

One of the most attractive eveing in Giza, even in the whole world, is the unique show combining the lights project on the three pyramids and the Sphinx, and the sound effects suggestive of the ancient Pharaonic atmosphere with the narration of the history of the Pyramids and the Sphinx. There are two places of this spectacle; first in Giza and it narrates the history of Old Egypt and the building of the Pyramids. The second spectacle is in Mohamed Ali Citadel and it narrates the historical events that happened in this Citadel. The show is narrated in seven languages: Arabic, English, French, German, Spanish, Japanese and Italian daily at sunset.
