Olympic Games

There are a lot of Myths and Legends about Olympics or Ancient Olympic Games, the most known Legend says that Heracles or Hercules, was the creator of Olympic Games, it was said that Heracles walked for 400 strides in a straight line, and called this distance Stadion (means Stadium in English) and he built the Olympic Stadium as an honor for his father Zeus, that distance became later, the standard distance of Olympic stadiums.

There's also another Myth says that the Greeks made a Truce called (Ehecheiria) which means (Olympic Truce), then, the game became more important, it acquired fundamental religious importance, alternating contests with sacrifice for the God Zeus and Pelops, the Devine Hero and King of Olympia, the winners of competitions were strongly admired with statues and poems, the games were held every 4 years, and the period between them was named Olympiad, they even used Olympiads to count years.

When Christianity became the official Religion of the Roman Empire, the Romans became more powerful, and they thought that Olympic Games are Pagan festival, so the Emperor Theodosius outlawed the Olympics to end a thousand years traditions.

At Ancient times, only Young People could participate , they were usually naked as a celebration of Human body's achievements, the winner don't just have the honor of being the first, but he was crowned by an olive crown, that olive branch was a sign of Peace and Hope.

As for bearing the Torch, it was an integral aspect of their Ceremonies and celebrations, also there's a symbol formed by interconnecting rings, and which is used nowadays as an introduction for the modern Olympiads.
