Museum of Ahmed Shawky

The museum located in 6, Ahmed Shawky St., off Mourad St., Giza, Egypt.


The 1433 metre museum overlooks the Nile, which used to be the major source of inspiration for great poet Ahmed Shawky.


Ahmed Shawky was dubbed the Prince of Arab Poets. Shawky named his residence Karmat ( Vineyard ) Ibn Hanie to express his admiration to great Arab Poet al- Hassan Ibn Hani?s ( Abu-Nawwas ).


The museum displays up to 1153 exhibits, which include oil paintings, antiquities and photographs of the poet, his family and some prominent figures. There are also documents and certificates highlighting the poet?s coronation as the Prince of Arab Poets.


Visitors will be cordially ushered into the poet?s bedroom, his desk, his wife?s bedroom, the drawing room, the library and a room which was allocated to singing legend and composer late Mohammed Abdel-Wahab. Abdel-Wahab?s room is now acting as a musical library.

On 3 of May, 1972 late President Mohammed Anwar Sadat issued a decree transforming the poet?s residence into a museum, which was opened officially on 17 of June, 1977.


The museum was re-opened on 27 March, 1996 after it was thoroughly restored and renovated. To widen its cultural role in the area the building?s basement was properly transformed into the fully-equipped the Center of Criticism and Creativity.
