Location:
Esna is situated 60 km to the south of Luxor on the west bank of the Nile.The earliest name of Esna was Iwnty then it was called tsny or sny, in the Greco-Roman period it was called Latopolis, because there is a kind of fish known by lates was sacred in this city, and in the Coptic period it was called CNH or ENCH from which came the Arabic name Esna.

Sightseeing:
The main attraction in Esna is the Temple of Esna which dates back to the Greco-Roman period, most parts of the temple are now in ruin and the only remaining part in this temple is the pronaos.
In addition to this temple there were four other temples situated in Esna. Three of them were situated to the north of the Esna temple, while the fourth temple was situated on the east bank of the Nile. Until the 19th century A.D, the remains of these temples were still visible but now they vanish completely.
Esna was an important city in the third nome of upper Egypt because this city was situated on the cross routes of trade between Egypt & Nubia, this trade route remained important until the 19th century A.D then it become less used.
