Allow Memphis Tours to guide you on a daytrip to Oman’s medieval capital and to the peak of the country’s highest mountain. Visit a 17th century fortress in Nizwa and explore the beautiful countryside around Jebel Shams, Oman’s tallest peak.
Set out from Muscat at 08:00 with your guide and travel 145 kilometers to Nizwa, which was the medieval capital of Oman in the 8th and 9th centuries. There you will visit a 17th century hilltop fortresses overlooking the town and the Nizwa souq. Continue onward toward Jabal Shams, the highest peak in Oman at over 3000 meters. Jabal Shams means “Mountain of the Sun” in Arabic, named so because it reaches so high into the sky. You will travel in a 4x4 vehicle so that you can leave the paved roads behind and see the countryside, which is dotted with traditional farming villages and shepherds with their sheep. The trip through this beautiful area offers some of the most beautiful and unspoilt terrain in all of Oman. Oman’s ‘Grand Canyon’ is here amidst the rocky terrain and offering breaktaking views. A picnic lunch will be served and you will return to Muscat in the afternoon, stopping through the abandoned village of Birkat al Mauz on the way. The tour will last approximately 8 hours.
