I just returned from a Mediterranean cruise that stopped in Alexandria for 2 days. I arranged a private tour to Cairo through Memphis Tours. They took care of every last detail. We were met at the port at 7:00 am by a private driver and our tour guide, Mr. Ahmed Abdul Hameed. Day 1, we visited the pyramids at Giza, the step pyramid built by Imhotep, the statue of King Ramses II and had a wonderful traditional Egyptian lunch. Ahmed escorted us to our hotel (the Movenpick) where our accommodations had been pre-arranged by Memphis. Our driver then took us to the evening sound and light show at the pyramids. He returned us to the hotel afterward. Food at the hotel, incidentally, was outstanding. Day II, we visited the Citadel of Saladin and Mosque of Muhammad Ali and the truly unbelievable Egyptian Museum of Antiquities. Lunch was at the Hard Rock Cafe in Cairo (they offered an Egyptian buffet that was terrific so don't be turned off by the name if you are looking for regional cuisine). We were pleased with absolutely everything on the tour but I must say that the absolute best part was our guide, Ahmed. I strongly encourage you to ask for him personally. We were truly amazed by the sheer volume of his knowledge of Egyptian history and culture. He also shared with us some very moving context on Islam during our visit to the Mosque of Muhammad Ali. Ahmed was extremely attuned to our needs and recommended a few excellent shops where we were able to browse without pressure. We felt very at home from the moment we met him. I cannot recommend him or Memphis Tours highly enough.
