There is another name to Mt Nebo; it is called Pisgah which Moses went up from the plains of Moab to Mount Nebo to the top of Pisgah which is opposite Jericho". Many centuries ago, pilgrims went to The Mount Nebo as final destination in their holy tour visiting the sanctuary. They are considering this site is one of the most important sites in their holy tour which helped archaeologists to identify this sanctuary. In the summer of 1933 under the direction of the Jerusalemite Franciscan Fathers, they began to discover one of the excavations at Syagha on the highest peak at Nebo, where three archaeological campaigns had declared the discovery of the Basilica and a large monastery, which expanded through the 6th century. The first church of Mount Nebo was built in the 2nd half of the 4th century to commemorate the place which Moses died in which included three apses and was preceded by a vestibule paved with plain white mosaic; two funeral chapels stood to the north and south of the lateral apses.
What you see: Six tombs from different periods which have been found hollowed out of the rock beneath the mosaic covered floor of the church. In the present presbytery remnants of mosaics, the earliest of which is a panel with a braided cross can be seen. The Serpentine Cross which stands just outside the sanctuary is symbolic of the brass serpent taken by Moses into the desert and the cross upon which Jesus was crucified. The Moses Memorial Church at Mount Nebo displays a large number of beautiful mosaics.
